Voting Tax

Posted by BoMToons - February 29th, 2016

I mis-read @TomFulp 's latest news post headline and thought he was instituting a voting tax. (http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1405581) - This would be known as a "poll tax" (an outgrowth of "Jim Crow" laws instituted to disenfranchise black voters) and expressly forbidden by the Constitution! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poll_tax_(United_States)

You narrowly dodged a bullet there Tom! And you thought US Tax laws were a hassle... don't mess with the Constitution!

Anyway, my world domination work continues forward on multiple fronts!

Barfbarians!

Found a repository of old anims and fx I made for a mobile game a while ago. The publisher might actually get around to releasing it soon!

Have I mentioned that I really enjoy making fx animations? Let me know which ones are your favorites! What are your leap day celebration plans?!

I like the blue electricity bolts in the top right of your bottom picture.

Is Barfbarians running at 60fps or 30? Still feeling good with GameMaker?

BB is currently running at 60 fps (though you can set the animations themselves to run independent of the overall game, so those are running at 12 fps I think... it has no problem so far running at 60, but not sure how I feel about the chunky 12 fps anims being moved around with smooth 60 fps code... most people won't notice probably?)

Still loving GameMaker, are you warming up to it?

It's normal for the character animation to not match the frame rate of the game itself, so I don't think anyone will mind that.

I need to make more time to tinker with Game Maker but I've enjoyed it so far. I had noticed screen tearing but GM does have VSYNC toggle, just searched and read this "In Global Game Settings, go to the Windows -> Graphics. Toggle the switch "Use synchronization to avoid tearing." That should enable VSync, so that your view doesn't do this." So I gotta try that.

Ah interesting! I was wondering if the screen tearing stuff was just my comp/graphics card. I will mess with that setting right now and let you know if it works!

Edit: Yep, that got rid of the screen tearing, game looks way smoother now when scrolling. Just copy pasted the example code into my initialization script and worked right away:

great animations dude.

Thanks MC :-D

Great work as always.

Is the next SCK key giveaway happening soon? :)

Ha ha, no, but now's a good time to grab it while it's cheap!

That acid rain is definitely my favourite, but really all of it is looking good.

Nice! I enjoyed making the skull steam!

I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of "Lurker Tax" incurred upon the large percentage of people who can't be bothered to vote on content...

Half-joking aside, the animations are looking stupendous! I was just about to mention the Barfbarians screen tearing, but now see that Tom beat me to it. Always on point, that guy. Some very nice glow effects, and yeah - I have to agree - the more virulent and acidic attacks really stand out!

Out of curiosity, would adding transparency make smoke and steam effects too CPU-intensive? That fire attack looks brutally awesome, but the smoke seems a little too dark and oily.

Good points! Yeah, I avoid transparency in everything, if possible, because of the CPU hit.
